Dr. Batmanghelidj,
Your Body's Many Cries for Water, by Fereydoon Batamanghelidj, ISBN
0-9629942-3-5 is the result of the author's research of water and
the human body's needs for it. The main idea of the book is that
thirst is just one of many of the body's ways of indicating that it
needs water; he attributes a wide range of diseases as alternate
symptoms of dehydration, including asthma, angina, dyspepsia,
obesity, and numerous others. The cure to dehydration is simple:
drink more water.
Dr. Batmanghelidj's most well-researched claim appears to be his
study of dyspeptic pain, of which he conducted while in the unusual
position of serving as a prison doctor in Iran. The author also
included a section in his book on an alternate theory of AIDS, which
is considered controversial.
The doctor's prescription is not for a special brand of bottled
water, wonder drug, or endorsement of any workout program, simply
that if people drank more water they would be a lot healthier.
Critics argue that some of his conclusions are ludicrous and
consider following his advice, at worst, a harmless waste of time;
some people may be unaware that too much water can cause death
through water intoxication. |

Dr. Batmanghelidj's Words
I Am a Missionary
"I truly am a missionary. And I have no commercial interest in selling water. I
don't even tell people to go buy designer water. I have no ulterior motive other
than truth."

The Love Story
"This book, Your Body's Many Cries for Water, is intended to be read as a novel
about the love relationship of water and the human body. The love story is about
you and water inside your body. It is also a love story between me and the
reader because I don't want people to be sick."

To Give Water a Try and Become Your Own Healer
I did not invent water. I only discovered its importance to health and
wellbeing. As a doctor, I ask you to give water a try."
"Understanding dehydration will empower you to become much healthier and you
will be able to become your own healer."
"The information on dehydration is ground-breaking. The explanation I have been
able to put together will educate the public about dehydration. And basically it
will turn everyone into a healer of their own bodies. And they are in turn
become healers for others around them. This is how information is spread so
far."

Need and Purpose
Sir Alexander Fleming and His Student
Sir Alexander Fleming was Nobel laureate recognized to have discovered
penicillin. He was a Scottish scientist who worked at the Wright-Fleming
Institute of St. Mary's Hospital Medical School of London University when I was
a medical student there in 1950s. Many medical students had an emotional urge to
become discoverers. I was no exception. Since childhood, I had been driven to
study medicine and become someone who could positively affect the lives of
people who fell sick.
In the introductory bacteriology course, students were divided into small groups
and assigned to different tutors. Luck placed me in the tutorial group assigned
to Sir Alexander. He was a refined and humble man. At the end of the tutorial, I
gathered enough courage to ask him a question, the answer to which has deeply
influenced me ever since.
I asked him, "Sir Alexander, is there a special way to become a discoverer in
medicine?" He looked at me and pondered my naive question. After a pause, in a
very refined Scottish brogue he replied, "Need and purpose." He explained that
with the increasing introduction of different treatment procedures into medical
practice, there was an ever-increasing rate of fatal bacterial complications. To
find an agent that would stop bacterial infections in the human body became a
most urgent need that established a purpose and resolve for those in bacterial
research. "Need" was the mother of penicillin's discovery, and "purpose" the
impetus of its development of human application.
- Water for Health, for Healing , for Life
How I Discovered the Healing Power of Water
"I discovered the healing power of water in a peculiar situation. When Iranian
Revolution broke out in 1979, I was placed in the infamous as a political
prisoner. One late night, I followed a howl, a shrieking groan in the corridor.
I found a young man doubled up in agony. He told me "My ulcer is killing me." I
asked, "What have you done for it?" He said, "I've taken three Tagamet and a
whole bottle of antacid and it hasn't done any good." I asked "When did it
start?" He said "At one o'clock in the afternoon." For 10 hours he was in that
position and no one could help. I examined his abdomen to see whether he had
perforated. Fortunately, he had not. I gave him two glasses of water and sat
next to him and observe him for ten minutes. I went back and came back in
another seven minutes. He was no longer groaning anymore. He opened his eyes,
sat up and was pain-free. Three glasses of water removed his pain in 20 minutes
whereas the best, strongest medication couldn't do anything."
"During two and half years of my imprisonment, I successfully I treated over
3,000 people with peptic ulcer disease with only water and I came away with
understanding that these people were really and only thirsty. They were
presenting their dehydration in the form of a painful crisis situation that we
in the medical profession had labeled as 'disease condition.'"
"After twenty three months, the prison warden told me the authorities were
considering releasing me. I thank him, but said I wanted to stay on in prison a
while longer. I was in the middle of clinical observation on the effect of water
as a treatment of various stress-induced health problems, including bleeding
peptic ulcer conditions. I stay in prison another four months. During my prison
time, I gained much new understanding about physiological effect of water and
its relationship to many disease conditions. I discovered that human body had
sophisticated crisis calls for water when it is stressed and becomes dehydrated.
I published the first announcement of my discovery in the Iranian Medical
Association while I was still in prison. A translation of the article was sent
to America and was eventually restructured for publication as a guest editorial
in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology in June 1983. The New York Times
Science Watch reported this discovery on June 21, 1983."

You Are Not Sick, You Are Thirsty
Don't Treat Thirst with Medication
"Medical professionals of today do not understand the vital roles of water in
the human body. Medications are palliatives. They are not designed to cure the
degenerative disease of the human body.
The current practice of clinical medicine is based on the application of
pharmacological chemistry to the human body. At the medical school, more than
six hundred teaching hours are allocated to the use of pharmaceutical products.
Only a few hours are allocated to instructions on diet and nutrition.
The simple true is that dehydration can cause diseases. Everyone knows that
water is good for the body. They seem not to know how essential it is to one's
well-being. They do not know what happens to the body if it does not receive its
daily need of water."
"We misinterpret thirst signals as pain, and treat them with drugs which silence
instead of cure the problem. Because dehydration eventually causes loss of some
functions, the various signals given by water distribution system regulators
during severe and lasting dehydration have been translated as indicators of
unknown disease conditions of the body. I discovered that histamine is a vital
chemical messenger in the brain. Histamine has a most important function not
written about in medical textbooks. It is in charge of water intake and drought
management in the body. It is less active when the body is fully hydrated, and
becomes increasingly active when the body becomes dehydrated.
To hush the body's call for water by masking the symptoms with drugs is like
turning out the dashboard light that signal us that our car is about to
overheat."
"Every function inside the body is regulated by and depends on water. Water must
be available to carry vital elements, oxygen, hormones, and chemical massages to
all parts of the body. Without sufficient water to wet all parts equally, some
more remote parts of the body will not receive the vital elements that water
supplies. Without sufficient water to constantly wet all parts, your body's
drought-management system kicks into action. The histamine-directed chemical
messenger systems are activated to arrange a new, low quota of water for the
drought-stricken area. When histamine and its subordinate "drought managers"
come across pain-sensing nerves, they cause pain. This is why dehydration
produces pain as its first alarm signal. If the dehydration persists and is not
corrected naturally with water, it becomes symptom-producing and, in time,
develops into a disease condition."
- Your Body's Many Cries for Water
The Water Cure
"The human body is composed of 25 percent solid matter and 75 percent water.
Brian tissue is 85 percent water. When we starve body cells of water, they start
to complain - and set up may adverse reactions."
"Dry mouth is not the only sign of dehydration and waiting to get thirty is
wrong. Pain in the body is a crisis call of the body for water. Thirst should be
prevented. When body does not receive enough water and you have pain that is a
sign of dehydration."
"Chronic pain of the body which cannot easily be explained as injuries or
infection should first and foremost be interpreted as signal of chronic water
shortage in the area where the pain is registered. These pain signals should
first be considered and excluded as primary indicators for dehydration of the
body before any other complicated procedures are forced on the patient."
"Once you understand how the human body works, the wonderful simplicity of water
as a free and permanently available choice of medication for so many health
problem begins to make sense."
"I have to abandon some of my past learning and build a new landscape for the
science of medicine in the future. Medicine has based its understanding that it
is a solid matter in the body that regulates all functions of the body. I have
explained scientifically at the molecular level that it is water that regulates
all functions of the body including functions of solid matter. Without water,
this solid matter is absolutely useless. It is water that energize and activates
the solid matter. 75 percent of our bodies are composed of water. The brain is
85 percent water. Now if the solid matter is not active without water therefore
water is more important than solid matter. And if you don't take enough of water
then some function of the body will begin to suffer. I am talking about system
disturbance - dehydration produces multi-system upheaval."
"This is new information based on science. It is simple information. The origin,
design, of the human body is made on simple events. Integrating these simple
events has producing an integrated body but the foundation of it is simplicity
is based on water. Water is what it needs. The medical community has spent 100
years of money and time researching the solid matter. If they spent a quarter as
much time and one tenth as much money on investigating dehydration, we will
become a much healthier nation."

Love Is a Powerful Healer
"Love is a powerful healer - giving love or receiving it. There is an inherent
insecurity that is associated with any disease, but especially cancer. When you
love somebody, you want to survive to continue to be with that person. When you
receive love, your body becomes energized and your immune system will lift its
level of action in the fight against the disease. Love changes the chemical
pathways of the brain, and this will affect your body's resistance. The love of
God, for those who believe in Him, has a similar effect."
"Patients are not just their "disease conditions" or "insurance addition"; they
are vulnerable human beings. Doctors or healers must freely project their
feelings of empathy and sincerity in their dealings with the sick. It is just
possible that empathy might be a stronger medication than anything they might
prescribe."
- Obesity, Cancer, Depression: Their Common Cause
Hearburn & Pain
"If you have heartburn, your body is telling you it's short of water in your
gastrointestinal track. You have had a heavy meal, there wasn't enough water to
liquefy and break down the food and get it absorbed. Since you did not have
enough water in the body, it manifested dehydration by producing heartburn."
"The best thing is to drink water half an hour before food if you are a
heartburn sufferer. Water will go into stomach and then into intestines and get
absorbed. Then that water is re-secreted entirely in the stomach, simultaneously
priming the mucus membrane to receive food. And, water is in the stomach to be
used for liquefaction of food - to break it, to prepare the food into particles
so that they can be absorbed. That is what water does. If you don't drink water
beforehand, the body does not have enough water that it can liberate for other
activity."
"Any water that is in your body is already engaged in an activity. You need
fresh water for fresh activity. If you're introducing solid food, this is a
fresh activity, you need fresh water to dissolve it and break it down.
Basically, the major pains in the body, such as, heartburn are signs of
dehydration in the human body. Where you have pain, it is showing that that area
is dehydrated."
"The mechanism is very simply. Toxic chemical waste builds up when you don't
drink enough water. If there is not enough water to wash away the chemical toxic
waster from an area that is still active metabolizing, then toxic waste builds
up. It is just like the garbage collector not collecting garbage that you are
still creating and putting it in front of your house to be cleared away. Then
that garbage does not get cleared away, in time it will become stagnant and it
will produce stench in your environment of the cells in the body."
"When there is waste that is not cleared up, the environment becomes pungent. It
will become acidic and this acidic toxic environment is sensed by the nerve
endings in the area. The signal is sent to the brain and the brain registers it
with our conscious mind in the form of pain. All you need to do is to wash that
toxic waste by drinking more water, letting it circulate to the area, and pass
it out through kidneys or neutralize it in the liver or some of the gases could
be passed through the lungs."
- Interview with PhenomeNews
Soda & Tap Water
"In advanced societies, thinking that tea, coffee, alcohol and manufactured
beverages are desirable substitute for the purely natural water needs of the
daily 'stressed' body is an elementary but catastrophic mistake. While these
beverages do contain water, they also contain dehydrating agents. They get rid
of the water they dissolved in plus some more water from the reserves in the
body."
"Soda and caffeine-containing beverages don't replace water needs of the body.
Caffeine is a dehydrate substance. It does not allow the water to stay in the
body long enough. Within an hour you will urinate more than the cup of beverage
that you drank. When children are give fruit juice and soda to the exclusion of
water, it only compounds the dehydration problem. At the same time, a cultivated
preference for the taste of sodas will automatically reduce the free urge to
drink water when sodas are available."
"Ordinary tap water, unless there is proof of its being contaminated with
chemicals and heavy metals such as lead, is a good source of water supply.
However if you are not convinced that your tap water is free of contamination
and impurities, save yourself from this anxiety by installing a small filtration
unit on your kitchen faucet. There are effective filter unit that can save you
from the hassle of carry its containers day in and day out."
